The tank role in Max Battle isn’t only about HP and Defense — it’s about how fast you can charge the team’s Max Meter. The fastest Fast Moves in Pokémon GO trigger every 0.5 seconds (vs. 1.0+ seconds for typical moves), so a Pokémon with a 0.5-second Fast Move can spam the meter at twice the rate of a slower attacker. Combine that with high bulk and the right type matchup, and you have a tank that lets your DPS slots do their job uninterrupted.
This guide ranks the Top 10 Max Battle tanks based on three factors: 0.5-second Fast Move availability, raw bulk (HP × Defense), and type resistance against the current boss rotation.
Why 0.5-Second Fast Moves Matter
Every Fast Move trigger fills a chunk of the Max Meter. A Pokémon using a 0.5s Fast Move triggers twice as often as one using a 1.0s Fast Move, so the meter fills at roughly double speed. This compounds: faster Max Meter → more Max Move uses → more team-wide damage and shields.
Combine that with high HP and Defense (so the tank actually survives long enough to fill the meter), and you get the formula for a Max Battle tank. The Pokémon below all clear both bars: 0.5s Fast Move available + top-tier bulk.
How This Ranking Was Calculated
- 0.5-second Fast Move: Required. Pokémon without a 0.5s option are excluded regardless of bulk.
- Bulk score: Per-boss durability (eDPS-equivalent endurance) at PL50 IV15 against the current boss rotation. Source: Max Battle Rating Summary Tank tier.
- Type matchups: Resistance to the boss type adds a multiplier; weaknesses subtract.
- Move flexibility: Pokémon with two viable 0.5s Fast Moves (e.g., Metagross with Bullet Punch + Shadow Claw) score higher because they can adapt to type matchups.

The Top 10 Max Battle Tanks

Blissey
Normal — Pound (0.5s) + the highest HP pool in the game. Blissey is the all-rounder tank that works against almost any boss except Fighting-types.

Zamazenta (Crowned Shield)

Metal Claw (0.5s) + Wall Charged Move grants a free shield at battle start. The premier “active tank” — soaks damage, charges meter, and contributes Steel-type DPS.

Gigantamax Snorlax
Normal — Lick (0.5s) + huge bulk + G-Max Replenish for team utility. Best Gigantamax tank pick. Slightly less HP than Blissey but trades that for Ghost coverage via Lick.

Latias

Dragon Breath (0.5s) + Psychic / Dragon dual-typing covers Fighting / Poison / Water resistances. The premier Dragon-side tank.

Zacian (Crowned Sword)

Metal Claw (0.5s). Less bulk than Zamazenta but the offensive output as a Steel attacker means it doubles as a damage slot.

Metagross
![]()
Two 0.5s options: Bullet Punch (Steel) and Shadow Claw (Ghost). Move flexibility makes Metagross adaptable across many boss types.

Latios
![]()
Dragon Breath (0.5s). Latios trades a bit of bulk vs. Latias for higher Attack — useful when you want the tank slot to also output meaningful damage.

Gigantamax Lapras
![]()
Two 0.5s options: Water Gun (Water) and Confusion-derived Psychic. The Ice / Water dual-typing handles Dragon and Fire-weak boss windows.

Corviknight
![]()
Sand Attack (0.5s). Steel/Flying dual-typing gives unique resistance set; Corviknight handles Fighting / Bug / Grass-weak boss windows comfortably.

Vaporeon
Water Gun (0.5s) + the highest HP among Eeveelutions. Easy to acquire (no raid candy needed) and slot-flexible against Fire / Ground / Rock boss windows.

Bottom Line
Tank role in Max Battle = 0.5s Fast Move + bulk + type fit. Blissey is the universal answer; Zamazenta and Gigantamax Snorlax are the elite alternatives when you need a Steel or Ghost-coverage option respectively. Match the tank to the boss type when you can, but a generalist tank like Blissey clears most boss windows on its own. For per-boss tank rankings, see Max Battle Rating Summary.
