“Lucky” Pokémon in Pokémon GO are trade-only Pokémon with a sparkly background, halved Stardust power-up cost, and — critically — a guaranteed minimum IV of 12/12/12. The Stardust discount alone can save you over 750,000 dust per Legendary, which is why which Pokémon you Lucky Trade matters more than which Pokémon you have. This guide explains how Lucky mechanics work, walks through the IV-floor math, and ranks the four tiers of Pokémon worth your next Lucky Trade.
How Lucky Pokémon Work
- Trigger: Lucky outcomes happen during a trade, with the probability rising the older both Pokémon are in their respective accounts. The recently-added Lucky Charm item turns every Lucky Friend trade into a guaranteed Lucky.
- Lucky tag: Once a Pokémon is Lucky, it stays Lucky forever. The sparkly background and halved Stardust cost persist through evolutions and form changes.
- IV floor: Lucky Pokémon are guaranteed at least 12 in each IV (Attack, Defense, HP). The remaining IV (12–15) is rolled randomly.
- Stardust savings: The full L1 → L50 power-up cost is roughly 1,500,000 dust. Lucky cuts this to about 750,000 dust — a 750k saving per build.
The IV Floor Math
Why does the 12/12/12 floor matter? In Pokémon GO, the Pokémon Appraisal grade (“Excellent / Great / Good / Bad”) is determined by total IV percentage:
- Excellent: 49–100% (45/45 = 100% IVs)
- Great: 41–48% (around 36/45)
- Good: 1–40%
- Bad: 0%
A Lucky Pokémon at the floor (12/12/12) totals 36/45 = 80% IVs — that lands solidly in the “Great” grade band. Even the worst-roll Lucky outcome is still high-IV territory; the upside (toward 15/15/15 = “Excellent”) is gravy. There’s no rerolling cost with Lucky Trade, which is a major hidden value compared to the regular catch-and-pray loop.
Tier 1 — Lucky-Worthy Legendaries
The full ranking is in the dedicated piece Best Pokémon for Lucky Trade — Top 10 Legendaries. Quick recap of the top 3:

Zacian (Crowned Sword)
![]()
Master League ace, top Steel raid attacker, Max Battle MVP. Highest Stardust burn of any Legendary, so the Lucky discount pays back fastest.

Zamazenta (Crowned Shield)
![]()
Same Steel-type damage as Zacian + Wall move for free Max Battle shield. The premier Max Battle Tank.

Groudon → Primal Groudon
Top Ground attacker non-Mega + Primal Reversion adds Sunny weather buff for the entire team.
For ranks 4–10 see the full Lucky Trade Top 10.
Tier 2 — Strong Non-Legendary Attackers
These Pokémon aren’t from Legendary raids, but their candy ceiling and second-Charged-Move costs are still significant. Lucky-Trading them saves 75k+ Stardust each on a build that gets daily use.

Metagross
![]()
Non-Mega top Steel + non-Mega top Psychic; double role from a single build. Both Bullet Punch and Shadow Claw are 0.5s Fast Moves, making it a Max Battle staple.

Tyranitar
![]()
Top non-Mega Rock and Dark attacker, useful in many boss windows. Mega Evolution unlock makes it dual-purpose.

Scizor
![]()
Bug + Steel utility, Mega-evolution upgrade path. Strong PvP applications across leagues, especially Great League.

Dragonite
![]()
Long-time Dragon staple. Lower DPS than Mega Rayquaza but vastly cheaper to build, and Mega evolution adds upside.
Tier 3 — Gym Defenders
Gym defenders sit in their gym for days at a time, so the IV floor of a Lucky doesn’t add raw value (defenders don’t need 15/15/15). The Stardust discount is what matters — half the cost to power up means twice as many defenders for the same dust.

Blissey
#1 gym defender on raw HP pool alone. A Lucky Blissey at L50 is the single best long-term gym slot in the game.

Shuckle
![]()
Highest Defense stat in the game (in a vacuum). Niche niche niche, but a Lucky Shuckle at L50 is hilariously durable.
Tier 4 — Collector Picks
If you collect rather than battle, Lucky-Trading shinies and event-form Pokémon (Costume Pokémon, Fashion Pokémon, etc.) preserves the rare aesthetic and the trade memory permanently. There’s no DPS / dust math here — it’s pure “I want this for the dex” reasoning. Use Lucky Trades on whichever rare-form catches you most want to immortalize.
Investment Strategy by IV Roll
Lucky doesn’t always roll 15/15/15. Here’s how to pick which Lucky-Pokemon roll deserves a power-up:
- Attack 15: Always priority. Attack is the dominant stat for raid DPS and Master League. Even 15-12-12 outperforms 12-15-15 in most scenarios.
- Attack 12-14: Still build if it’s a Tier 1 / Tier 2 pick from the list above. The 80% IV floor keeps the loss small (~3% Stat Product in ML).
- Defense / HP IVs: Less critical for raid attackers. For Master League and PvP, balance matters; for raids, just check Attack.
- Highest IV Lucky in your collection wins: Always power up the highest-Attack Lucky of a species before building a non-Lucky alternative.

Bottom Line
Use Lucky Trades on Pokémon you’ll actually power up to L40+. The 750k Stardust saving compounds, but only on builds you complete. Tier 1 (Lucky-worthy Legendaries) is the highest-value bracket; Tier 2 (strong non-legendaries) is the best mid-investment band; Tier 3 (defenders) trades flexibility for permanence; Tier 4 (collectors) is purely about preservation.
